Chapter 1

Chris walked slowly up the driveway towards the posh apartment complex in which he lived. His whole body ached and he was not looking forward to what he was going to find when he reached his apartment. Emptiness. He hated the fact that every night he came home to find it empty and himself alone. It's not like it was a surprise that his apartment would be empty, but for once he wanted to be greeted when he arrived. Knowing someone was there waiting for him, anticipating his arrival because they missed him. They loved him and wanted him home so they could spend time with him. He retrieved his mail and sifted through the various bills and flyers that were addressed to him wishing that his life was different. It wasn't that he had a hard life, a bad life, just an unsatisfying one. He had moved to New York for business and thought that perhaps it was a change of location that he needed to bring himself out of the funk he'd been in. He was 30 years old and one of the most successful psy chologists that LA had seen in ages. But it was all a joke. How could he help people when he couldn't even help himself? People paid him exorbitant amounts of money for the chance to lay on his couch for an hour and have him listen to them and their problems. Sometimes he didn't even need to say anything, just murmur every so often to show that he was listening. And lately, it all seemed to be suffocating him. Hearing about other peoples lives was getting on his nerves because it always made him think, 'well when is someone going to listen to me for once? When is it my turn?'.

Chris was so wrapped up in himself that he failed to see anyone in front of him as he was stepping off the elevator. With a crash, both men landed on the floor looking at each other with stunned silence. "Oh shit. I'm so sorry." Chris exclaimed, standing up and extending his arm for the other man to take. "No problem buddy. I didn't even see you." Chris' pulse quickened as the other man smiled at him, running his fingers through his dark blonde curls. "I'm Brian, just moved in down the hall." Looked down the hall where Brian's arm was extended and finger was pointing and smiled back at the friendly stranger. He lived right next to Chris.

"Name's Chris. I guess I'm your neighbor." Chris smiled picking up the mail that had scattered when the two men had collided. I live in 1204. It's a great building Beautiful apartments." Chris knew that he was just rambling, but he couldn't help it. There was nothing waiting for him in his apartment except for a frozen dinner for one, and talking to this handsome neighbor was much more exciting than any solo dinner.

"Yeah, a friend suggested I move in here. I've been looking for something for months. Had to move out of my old place and couldn't find anything I really liked. He had lived here for quite some time and suggested I check this building out, and so I did. He was right though, definitely better than where I was living." Brian said, an unreadable expression on his face.

"Your friend lived here? How long ago? I've been here for almost a year now and so maybe I know him." Chris asked, wanting to prolong the conversation. He hadn't felt this peaceful and happy in a long time. Plus he reveled in the opportunity to get information on his new neighbor, wanting to know more about him.

"Oh, man. He moved out about 6 months ago so you might have known him. Josh. Josh Chasez. He lived on the 8th floor with his boy..." Brian paused blushing, realizing what he was just about to say. "Um, with his friend Kevin Richardson."

Chris laughed at Brian's discomfort and put his hand on the other man's arm to relax him. "Don't worry about it. I know Josh and Kevin. Not well but we'd talked before and yeah, I know they're gay. So it's cool." Chris smiled reassuringly at Brian and was happy when he saw the tension dissipate. "They'd had some problems and I was in the right place at the right time and was able to help them. How are they doing?"

"Really well. Their house is beautiful and they're happier than ever. Josh's music school is doing well and Kevin's teaching a few classes there along with his environmental work." Brian and Chris spoke for a few minutes more when Brian looked at his watch and saw that it was after 7. "Oh crap. I'm sorry to bolt but if I don't leave now I'll be late to meet someone." Brian actually looked disappointed that he had to go and Chris was elated.

"Oh, that's no problem. I'm sorry to have kept you this long Brian." He replied, adjusting the bag on his shoulder and looking down, embarrassed.

"Oh god no. I'm so glad I met you Chris. It's good to have a friend in the building. We'll probably be seeing a lot of each other, seeing that we're right next to one another. Maybe we can get together sometime for coffee or something." Brian pushed the button to signal the elevator and Chris thought he was going to just faint at the smile the other man flashed him.

"Yeah, that sounds great Brian." He replied, genuinely excited. "Drop by anytime, I'm usually home around this time every day. I'm not one for putting in extra hours at the office, so I'm home quite early." Chris wanted to slap himself for sounding so stupid and desperate. 'Oh yeah Chris, real smooth. Just tell him that you're a pathetic loser that sits around his apartment and does nothing.' His inner monologue chided him.

"Great. Well I'll see you around Chris." Brian called stepping onto the elevator letting the doors close behind him. Once he was alone, Chris made his way down the hall and stopped at Brian's door, running his hand along the wood finishing. He didn't suspect that Brian was gay and he felt his heart sink at that. Not that you could always tell, but still. He remembered when he met Kevin and Josh, he knew instantly that Josh was gay but thought that Kevin was straight. It wasn't until he walked into the elevator one day to find them wrapped in each other's arms that he learned different about Kevin. He was surprised, hell they were mortified when they noticed Chris watching them but once Chris assured them that he was fine with it they began to talk and became somewhat friends.

Chris walked into his apartment and sighed at the emptiness of it. What he wouldn't give to have someone there waiting for him. And suddenly that someone had a face, a voice and Chris felt a stirring in his boxers. The person he'd always envisioned waiting for him to arrive home was always faceless, nameless. But now he could picture Brian curled up comfortably on the couch watching TV. Or Brian sitting at the dining room table sharing dinner with him and laughing at something Chris had said. Or Brian tucked firmly into his embrace after they had just made love in their bed, their breathing in complete sync. He walked into his kitchen and started defrosting something for dinner, realizing that he should get some work done before settling in and getting comfortable. He had a new patient today and wanted to find out everything he could about the disorder that the referring doctor told him that the young man had before making any judgments.

A few hours later Chris stood and stretched, needing some fresh air to clear his head. He'd been reading up on the kid's file from his last psychologist and got engrossed in his work. He walked out onto the balcony and took a deep breath, amazed at his night. For the first time in hours he let himself think about Brian again and wondered what he was doing right now. Who he was with.

"Kaos, you sure that everything's okay with him? He seems ... I don't know." Chris instantly recognized the voice as Brian's and realized that they must be on his balcony. He knew that he shouldn't listen in on the conversation but couldn't force himself to leave, wanting to just listen to the cute accent Brian had.

"Rok, what can I tell you. He says he's fine, we have to believe it. I don't see why you care, after everything that happened, after what he did to you. If I were you I'd say fuck him!" The other voice spoke and Chris got jealous. Who was this guy? Why was he there with Brian? Suddenly Chris hated this person and wanted to throw him down the 12 floors to a gruesome death.

"Damn Nick. Above everything he's my friend. I hate to see him like that." Brian's voice got soft and Chris thought maybe he was crying. "Anyways, enough about Alex. How's Julie? Everything going well there?"

"Fuck man. She's great! I just can't believe that she puts up with all my shit sometimes. Every night I go home just expecting her to be gone but she's always still there. I forgot her birthday last week you know." Nick laughed and suddenly Chris didn't hate him so much.

"Yeah, I know. She called the other day just flipping out. Apparently you yelled at her that morning for something that you did and then stormed out of the house when you realized that she was right and didn't come back until dinner, still without a present or even a Happy Birthday." Upon hearing them discuss more personal aspects of their lives, Chris decided to head back into his apartment, not wanting to violate their privacy. The question of who this Alex guy was plagued Chris though. It sounded like something serious, and Brian seemed to be upset by their discussion of this guy. Putting it out of his head, Chris figured that he would just forget about it. He didn't want to get in too deep with his feelings for Brian, unsure of where it would ultimately lead him.
