Strawberry Kisses
by Jules

He hates strawberries. The taste. The smell. Just everything about them. Whether real or artificial, the second he comes in to contact with them, he feels his whole body react. His face heats up, his stomach lurches and he feels nauseous. Not to mention the mixture of sadness and rage that consumes him.

When they were told that they would have a line of lip glosses with their faces and names attached, there had been a big debate on who would have what flavour. He didn't care. As long as he wasn't strawberry he wanted whatever flavour they were going to give him. They agreed and designated Chris as strawberry. In fact, he never even really knew what flavour he was. He didn't care. As long as he wasn't strawberry.

Joey had asked him countless times what the fruit issue was. That's what it was, the 'fruit issue'. When he refused to answer, he got an exaggerated sigh in return. Justin had also asked, wondering how anyone could hate strawberries. "They're so erotic and sensual dude. Pure romance and love." Those had been Justin's words exactly and he didn't have a response to that. Because Justin was right. They were all those things. He thought that might have been the problem though. And that was something he didn't really want to think too much about.

Chris and Lance double teamed him by bringing him every type of strawberry concoction they could imagine. It seemed that when there was something one of them didn't like, the others made sure to force it on them, just because they could. They told him it was for his own good. To help him get over whatever it was that he had to get over. Instead, he simply got so upset he cried, running to the bathroom to throw up. His chest was heaving and his heart broke.

Again.

Chris and Lance left him alone about the 'fruit issue' from that point on, warning Joey and Justin to do the same. The problems with strawberries was just too big for them to handle, and it was best that he had space on the issue.

JC could remember every second of that day. THE day. The day that his problems with strawberries surfaced. It was like a movie in his mind that wouldn't shut off. Smells ...sounds ...tastes ...especially tastes were amplified. And no amount of wishing would undo what had been done. He'd tried for five years, and still nothing. No hope.

He had no idea why he'd come to the party. It wasn't normally his type of thing. Justin's maybe. Lance's definitely, but certainly not his. And not alone. But something had told him to go, that he HAD to be there. So he went. The crowd was thick and it appeared that everyone who was anyone was there. JC smiled dutifully as he wove his way through the crowd. It wasn't as if he didn't like these people, it was more that he didn't care. They didn't impress him.

His gaze turned toward the corner of the room, landing on familiar blue eyes. A smile that still managed to send his pulse racing and hair that looked as soft as it really was. It wasn't as though they hadn't seen each other since that night. They had. More times than JC would like to remember. But each time he was just as affected as he had been that first night. Their only night. Well, it couldn't be considered a night ...it was more like 20 minutes. But the fog he'd been in lasted all night. So that should count.

The temperature in the room seemed to raise about 50 degrees and time stopped. At least it felt that way. And then he thought that he might throw up. Or faint. Or both. Their eyes locked and he felt the air whoosh out of his lungs, leaving him breathless. Nick flashed him a smile, something JC wasn't expecting. Usually, the younger man ignored him completely. Well since that night anyway. But as he stood in the middle of the room, gawking stupidly, JC felt the air in the room shift. He smiled back, hope sparkling in his eyes.

It took him 40 minutes to gather the courage to approach. And the fact that Nick was finally alone now. He felt much more comfortable approaching him when he was by himself rather than with friends. "Hey." His voice was soft, unsure. Nick only nodded, motioning for him to sit in the spot right beside him. JC shook his head. He wanted to go outside where they could be alone. Really alone. The voice in his head kept warning him against it, but he ignored it. He needed this, whatever it was going to be.

"Can we go outside?"

Nick simply nodded, standing up and stretching his back and neck out. Their eyes met and JC felt the electricity between them. Silently, they made their way to the patio and JC couldn't help but hope this time his heart wouldn't be shattered.

The small talk was slightly awkward at first, both men unsure of what was expected of them. What they themselves were expecting. Nick was the first to breach the subject on the forefront of both of their minds. "I'm sorry you know. I'm really sorry."

Suddenly JC's pulse was racing and there were nervous butterflies in his stomach. "For what?"

"You know what."

And JC did. Nick was sorry and he searched his eyes for some sort of dishonesty. A clue to say that Nick was just fucking with his mind. He found none. Nick was sorry for breaking his heart, that's what he was sorry for. Nick had been 17, JC 21. It was the summer before JC's 22nd birthday and they had been at some party, much like this one, they had started talking. No one was paying them much attention and so they snuck off. In a bold move, JC had kissed the blonde, the taste of his strawberry chap stick still on his tongue. JC remembered thinking that it was strange, strawberry chap stick and wondered where he got it because he'd never seen that kind before. He thought that maybe he had made a mistake until he felt Nick's tongue against his lips, moving swiftly into his mouth.

It had taken 10 minutes for someone to find them, that someone being Brian. Brian had freaked out when he'd found them alone in an empty room and wondered what was going on. Nick looked at Brian with teary blue eyes and denied everything, claiming that he'd gotten lost and JC had just found him. Nothing was happening, nor would it ever. Especially not with JC. It was the tone in Nick's voice that hit JC the hardest.

That was when JC's heart broke into a thousand pieces and as Nick looked back, his eyes full of sorrow and regret, JC knew that the blonde had seen it written clearly on his face. But still, nothing had been said. He hadn't heard from Nick again, until now.

"Okay." There wasn't really much JC could say. Five years had passed. A lot had changed. But as Nick turned to face him, JC realized that not as much as he'd thought had changed. Some things were still the same. And his feelings for Nick fell into that category. He could feel the blonde next to him and willed his body not to react.

"Do you believe me?" Nick's eyes were wide, his voice soft and timid. JC's heart sped up.

"I do."

"Good."

Their eyes locked and Nick smiled as he covered JC's hand on the railing with his own. JC's hand burned from where Nick's skin touched his and if that wasn't enough, he could feel Nick's breath on his cheek, an indication that he had moved closer. Their faces were inches apart and Nick paused, asking "can I?" He received a nod in response.

The kiss was slow and tentative at first, building in passion and momentum. JC's tongue slipped out, tracing Nick's lips in a silent request for entrance. Permission was granted and their tongues moved back and forth, tasting and licking one another passionately. The kiss continued for a few minutes, the men clutching onto one another hungrily until a voice broke them out of their bubble.

"Excuse me Nick?"

JC groaned, wondering what Brian had against him. This seemed to be his fate, being interrupted just as he was getting somewhere with Nick. Licking his lips, JC could still taste Nick on them.

"Rok? Yeah?"

JC was shocked when Nick didn't pull away. He only broke the kiss to look at his best friend questioningly.

"What's going on?" Brian looked from Nick to JC back to Nick, his arms crossed over his chest protectively.

"None of your business Brian." At that, Nick turned to JC and smiled. JC gasped as Nick leaned in to kiss him again. As JC sucked on Nick's lower lip, he fought not to sigh, his whole body humming with excitement.

"No more strawberry." He commented when the kiss broke, running his fingers down Nick's jaw to his lips.

Nick blushed as he understood JC's reference. "Nah." He shook his head. "Not a fan of strawberries."

"Me neither." JC agreed, sucking on Nick's lips playfully. The taste of Nick's lips invaded his mouth, coated his tongue. JC had always liked the sweet taste of cherries better anyways.
