You're So Fine
by Jules

Justin had done his solo album. Joey did Rent. Lance did the whole space thing, which didn't exactly pan out but still, it filled that time adequately. JC did a lot of writing and recording. Chris hadn't done much of anything really, just hung out and went to parties. Was seen just enough so that no one would forget who he was but still stayed in the back of the spotlight. But the break was over and now they were all back in the studio recording. Writing. Creating. They hadn't realized how much they'd missed each other and NSYNC until they were finally in the same room together for longer than the duration of a party where one of them would slip out as soon as possible bidding the others a good night and telling them how good it had been to see them again.

JC had called a break so that he could make a few phone calls and everyone had jumped at the chance to stretch their legs and get something to eat. Chris found himself standing in front of the vending machine weighing out his options. "Oh Nicky, you're so fine. You're so fine you blow my mind hey Nicky.... Hey Nicky." His head bobbed back and forth as his hips swayed to the music that was in his head, Lance, Joey and Justin watching in amusement. Again he repeated the line, "Oh Nicky, you're so fine. You're so fine you blow my mind hey Nicky.... Hey Nicky."

"Uh Christopher?" Joey spoke, startling Chris out of the daze he seemed to be in.

"Yes Joseph." Chris grinned and mocked the pretentious tone that Joey had taken with him, pushing the desired buttons to watch as his candy dropped to the bin at the bottom.

"You do realize that the song? It's not Nicky. It's Mickey"

Chris's eyes darted from Joey to Justin and Lance who were nodding and stifling their giggles behind outstretched hands. "And what are you two giggling at? It's not like you were even born when that song was popular!"

Lance simply rolled his eyes and let his laughter surface. "Fuck you old man. I was too alive. But he's right Chris, it's Mickey. With an M not an N."

"Don't you children think I know that?" Chris shook his head as if talking to children, a grin on his face. "I just think that Nicky suits the song better. Don't you?" Chris didn't bother to wait for a response. Instead he gave them both a wink and headed off towards the studio, humming the song under his breath.

Joey, Lance and Justin were left to watch their best friend head down the hall, none of them understanding what had just happened.

They spent their days in the studio, some nights as well, but on the nights that they actually made it out of the studio at a decent hour Chris always seemed allude them. He always had plans, or was too tired to hang out, or sometimes didn't even bother to come up with an excuse to ditch them. He would only grin at them, eyes twinkling and tell them that they'd see him tomorrow, same NSYNC time, same NSYNC studio.

Chris was laying on the couch, reading a comic book when JC entered the room, shocked to find that he wasn't the first one there. "Oh Nicky what a pity you don't understand, you take me by the heart when you take me by the hand. Oh Nicky you're so pretty, can't you understand, it's guys like you Nicky. Oh what you do Nicky, do Nicky, don't break my heart Nicky."

"You know, they warned me about this but I didn't believe them. I thought they were making it up." JC dropped his bag on a chair and spun to see a smirk on Chris' lips. "But seems like they weren't pulling my

leg."

"Whatever are you talking about Joshua." They always seemed to use full names when trying to be witty. Chris cocked his eyebrow to punctuate his point.

"The fact that you're singing Nicky instead of Mickey."

"I didn't realize it was something to be alarmed about. That OEdiscussions' were being had behind closed doors about it." Chris even did the quotations in the air, giving JC an annoyed grin.

"No OEdiscussions' have been had. Justin brought it up and Joey and Lance said that it was weird. End of story." JC did his own air quotations and Chris rolled his eyes.

"I can't change the words without it being a big deal?"

"But ...why? What's so fucking big about that song?" JC took his place at the switchboard and started the machines, half listening.

"It's just ...you wouldn't understand." The tone in Chris' voice indicated that the discussion was over and JC simply shrugged his shoulders in response.

"Whatever bro."

They realized that it wasn't every day that Chris would sing his rendition of Mickey. He wouldn't offer explanations of what it meant, but just that he preferred his version to the original. One day they were all hanging out at dinner when JC suggested that they all go out together. As a group. It had been forever since they'd gone clubbing together and it would be fun to just get out and relax. They watched Chris' expression closely, seeing only a hint of uncertainty before he broke out into a full grin.

"That would fucking rock guys. Great idea. Where?"

Plans were made and they'd decided that they'd meet up at a friend of JC's club. Directions were given and they were to meet in the VIP lounge after 11.

Chris found that he was the last to show up, Joey arriving only fifteen minutes earlier. They settled at a table and drinks were ordered, the guys having a chance to relax and just hang out. Justin noticed that Chris had been watching the door every so often, whispering it quietly to Lance who indicated that he too had noticed. It seemed as though the older man was apprehensive about something, although he was doing a fantastic job of covering it up.

Eventually they'd made it to the dance floor, Justin, Chris and JC each deciding that it was time to start working off the alcohol they'd been drinking. As Justin turned to say something to the girl he was dancing with, he saw a familiar blonde standing by the bar. It was as if they'd all noticed him at the same time because as Justin's eyes moved from Nick Carter, they landed on Chris who seemed to be blushing, a shy smile on his face. Justin felt someone behind him and gave a quick look over his shoulder, eyes meeting JC's who was giving him a perplexed look.

About an hour passed and JC and Justin watched Chris and Nick give each other eyes. Chris continued to dance, but always seemed to have Nick in his line of sight. The same could be said for Nick, although they weren't sure if they were reading too much into things or not. "Lets go get a drink," Chris yelled over the music, waiting for Justin and JC to nod and follow. They made small talk while they waited, Chris watching Nick with silent fascination. Justin was about to mention something about it when the blonde in question approached, a coy smile decorating his lips. He nodded at JC first and then Justin, the two men sharing a handshake and a half hug as they exchanged pleasantries.

Neither JC nor Justin could hide the shock that covered their faces at Nick's next move. He smoothly slid next to Chris and leaned down, whispering something into his ear. Whatever it was clearly made the hair on Chris' neck stand up and his hand tremble. Chris pulled away and cocked his head to the side, giving Nick a smile that they hadn't seen before. His eyes seemed to dance and he mouthed OEokay', nodding his head. They headed to the dance floor and began dancing, bodies close but not too close.

"What the fuck was that?" Lance asked, breaking into their thoughts. Joey wasn't far behind.

"I know, I mean ...damn. Carter?"

Justin and JC only shook their head, the four men watching, captivated. The two men danced for a total of two songs before Nick leaned down to whisper something in Chris' ear for the second time that night. The lights in the club were dim, but they were certain that they saw a hint of Nick's tongue on Chris' earlobe, his

hand briefly gripping Chris' hip. The older man turned his head in slightly, as if replying to whatever Nick had said. Both men let out laughs and four jaws dropped as the two men walked off of the dance floor and towards the door, Chris not even bothering to look back.

Chris was the last to show up at the studio the next day, and the fact that he was a few hours late didn't go unnoticed by anyone. He entered the room, seemingly unnerved by the fact that there were four sets of eyes focused on him, waiting in anticipation for some sort of explanation as to why he had just up and left them at the club. And not only leaving them, but leaving with Nick Carter. Instead of saying anything he simply winked and sang just a little louder than he previously had. "Oh Nicky, you're so fine. You're so fine you blow my mind hey Nicky.... Hey Nicky."

The mood shifted instantly and everyone let out the breath that they had been holding. Justin stretched and turned his chair around to face his best friend. "I guess your version is more appropriate!"

Chris could only grin back as he wiggled his eyebrows.
